More Than Words...

Okay, so I went on Half.com a couple days ago and I purchased...a copy of "Dream for an Insomniac", which is basically, if you want my two cents, a mediocre movie (think a little better than college productions; besides, Jennifer Aniston is in it--that tells you already. hehe) I watched it many years ago in the Philippines (on HBO Asia, no less) one night when I couldn't sleep. The only reason why I bought this movie (in addition to it being very cheap for a DVD) is because it, to me, reflects so much of the "other side", I guess, of my personality that most people do not get to see, especially when it comes to my viewpoint on love and romance.

I think that, for the most part, I connect so much with the movie, in addition to being a "sleepless dreamer" cum "neurotic romantic" at heart, because it has so many "quotable quotes" (A2000 boys, start underlining now! haha) scattered throughout the movie. It would be safe to say, to an extent, that I'm very much like the main characters in the movie in terms of my outlook on love and life, intellectually aroused yet physically drawn to "eyes of another". The quotes in the movie are full of cynicism and the insights, peppered with sarcasm and wit. Believe me, if you know what's going on in my life right now, you will understand what I mean when I say this movie is close to explaining it all. For instance, why I believe that love is such an enormous yet fulfilling experience that can't be rationalized away to mediocrity, to being "just satisfied", striving not "settling" at all.

If you happen to chance upon it at a bargain bin, watch it. You may hate it, but for some of you, I think that it could shed some light on what goes in my head and especially the people and the events in my life that it may refer to (and having watched part of it today after SEVERAL YEARS of not watching the movie...it's funny how relevant it is) as well.

From what I read, either people loved it (me) or hated it (everyone else). Also, the choice of quotes scattered throughout the movie, including those by the writer, are very philosophical--because the writer herself was a philosophy major (yeah!) turned movie writer/director of some acclaim (?).I think the movie, for all its weaknesses, reflects life very well in the sense that the world we live in isn't glamorous or event-filled at all--it's people who make it special and our attempts to make it our own, I guess.

Fundamentally, I guess the most important thing about this movie, to me at least, is that when I first watched it, I saw myself in it...as a sleepless person trying to convey what they feel..."sleeping" at the end when everything finally resolves itself. Sometimes, I feel that I communicate so much more outside of my words, especially when I am flustered and frustrated about a certain situation. And sometimes the reason why everything, everyone, and every thing happens can be only explained (or in my case, rationalized) in something beyond what we think, something more than words can express alone, bringing colour and life to life itself.

So, I leave you with some quotes from the movie (Some of these quotes may refer to the words of famous people, philosophers, and pop icons).Enjoy.

"Anything less than mad, passionate, extraordinary love is a waste of time."

"I never give up. I either get what I want or I change my mind first."

"We cheer up occasionally, but we get over it."

"Life might suck anyway but it's better to suck with integrity...right?"

"Fun is fleeting, it's pain that endures and gives life it's meaning."

"Settle for anything and you're doomed. My biggest fear in life is being mediocre. We can't be willing to settle for anything, especially for less than we deserve; we watch other people live out their dreams instead of investing in dreams of our own. We should strive for greatness- life is too short."

"Love David Love I mean does the thought of her, the smell of her, the touch of her make you quiver,I mean when she's away from you do you think about her and wish she were in your arms making love to you, when you see her after not seeing her a whole day does she make everything ok?"

"Knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers."

"You live in a dream world!"..."Don't I wish?"

"Did I ever tell you your my favourite cousin?" "I'm your only cousin." "Well you know what John Lennon said 'One is all you need.'" "He said 'Love, Love is all you need'." "He was right!"

"I know that life can be taken away from you at any random moment David. I know that if you don't make an effort to be happy you won't be happy, I know that there's a point when your 'maybe laters' become too late. If you only dream when you're asleep, then when you wake up, there's still nothing there."

"I am troubled immeasurably by your eyes, I am struck by the feather of your soft reply, the sound of glass speaks quick disdain, and conceals what your eyes fight to explain."

I loved the movie. nothing like cheap films with good quotes and a guilty ability to get away with sap.
